ABOM Diplomate Certification OverviewThe American Board of Oral Medicine (ABOM) administers a specialty certification examination for qualified candidates who are accomplished in the field. The certification exam is administered in two parts: Qualifying Examination and Oral Clinical Cases The goal of the certification examination is to fairly and accurately assess graduates of United States CODA accredited advanced education programs in Oral Medicine to a level of knowledge pertinent to patient care in Oral Medicine as it is practiced in the USA. Individuals who pass all requirements of this board examination become Diplomates of the American Board of Oral Medicine.
About the Qualifying ExamAbout the Oral Clinical Cases ExamRecertification / MaintenanceAll Diplomates certified by the American Board of Oral Medicine are expected to act in an ethical matter in all professional matters, stay current in the latest practices related to oral medicine, and maintain communication with the American Board of Oral Medicine. To maintain their status, Diplomates must: 1. Annual Renewal: Every year, renew with the American Board of Oral Medicine. Diplomates are expected at this time to: verify contact information, attest to compliance with ABOM's Code of Ethics, and attest to staying current with at least 35 credits of continuing education specific to Oral Medicine within the past three years. They are also expected to pay a fee, which is currently $400, that is subject to change. ABOM Code of Ethics

Subject to Audit: Every year, to ensure that Diplomates are in compliance with maintaining 35 credit hours of continuing education ABOM conducts an audit of 5% of diplomates to ensure compliance with credit hours. 3. Examination: Every 10 years all Diplomates will recertify by submitting their 35 credit hours of continuing education, and also complete an examination in oral medicine practices. A fee is also required.
Retire / Life
Diplomates who retire will notify ABOM of their retired status and will move honorably to Retired status. Those Diplomates who do not renew will be marked as Non-Active in ABOM records and ABOM can no longer recognize them as current Diplomates. |
